Clemson No. 2, App St. earns 1st ranking

Clemson is back at No. 2 in The Associated Press college football poll behind top-ranked Alabama, moving up to where it started, after a convincing victory and Ohio State's first loss of the season.

The Crimson Tide are a unanimous No. 1, with all 61 first-place votes , for the first time this season.

The Tigers trailed only Alabama in the preseason rankings, but a couple of close wins in September - combined with seemingly impressive performances by other highly ranked teams - dragged Clemson to as low as No. 4.


Alabama looks to improve before LSU game

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) After spending the first two months of the season dominating college football, No. 1 Alabama heads into its open date believing it still has plenty of room for improvement.

Opponents may wonder how much better the Crimson Tide can get. Alabama (8-0, 5-0 SEC) has outscored teams by 35.8 points per game and has averaged 54.1 points to lead all Football Bowl Subdivision programs . Alabama trounced Tennessee 58-21 on Saturday while posting the highest point total ever produced by a visiting team at Neyland Stadium, which opened in 1921.


Purdue stuns No. 2 Ohio State with rout

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) Jeff Brohm decided to go for it against No. 2 Ohio State on Saturday.

The Buckeyes buckled under the pressure.


Michigan beats MSU after pregame spat

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) Michigan had plenty of reasons to be motivated to beat Michigan State, barely defeating its in-state rival over the last decade and losing to every ranked team on the road for a dozen years.

The Wolverines, though, were even more fired up to win after a pregame spat with the Spartans.


No. 25 WSU holds off No. 12 Oregon

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) One of the biggest days in program history for Washington State started with a celebration outside the gates of Martin Stadium and ended with fans partying on the field.

Gardner Minshew threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Dezmon Patmon in the back of the end zone with 3:40 left and No. 25 Washington State beat No. 12 Oregon 34-20 on Saturday night.


Without QB Milton, UCF's streak hits 20

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) No. 10 UCF didn't have its Heisman Trophy hopeful, so the Knights' opportunistic defense kept taking the ball from East Carolina and giving it to their backup quarterback.

Darriel Mack Jr. stepped in for McKenzie Milton and rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown, and UCF forced five turnovers in beating East Carolina 37-10 for its 20th straight victory.


No. 9 Oklahoma rebounds with win at TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) Kyler Murray and the Oklahoma offense piled up yards and scored points like they have been all season.

Kenneth Murray and the Sooners defense did their part as well as ninth-ranked Oklahoma bounced back from its only loss, winning 52-27 at TCU on Saturday in the first game since defensive coordinator Mike Stoops was fired.


Washington pulls away late to top Buffs

SEATTLE (AP) Jake Browning and Aaron Fuller saw the pressure Colorado was about to bring and the open field that awaited.

One quick slant connection between Browning and Fuller was finally enough for No. 15 Washington to shake the Buffaloes.


No. 19 Iowa tops Terps, wins 3rd in row

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) On a day when the wind made nearly every play an ugly one, Iowa's defense looked beautiful.

Nate Stanley threw for 86 yards and a touchdown and 19th-ranked Iowa pummeled Maryland 23-0 on Saturday for its third straight victory.


Taylor, Deal help Wisconsin bounce back

MADISON, Wis. (AP) No. 23 Wisconsin bounced back from a devastating loss to maintain its hopes of a West Division title and a return to the Big Ten championship game

Jonathan Taylor rushed for 159 yards and Taiwan Deal ran for 111 yards and two touchdowns as the Badgers took advantage of five first-half turnovers to rout Illinois 49-20 on Saturday.
